The community of Grassy Narrows First Nation (also known as Asubpeeschoseewagong First Nation), is an Ojibwe First Nations band who reside north of the town of Kenora in the Lake of The Woods region. As of October 2020, the community had a population of approximately 1,200. They are part of the Treaty 3 Nations.
Subsequently, Highway 671 is the highway that connects to our reserve. This highway leads toward Kenora which is approximately 68.7 km away. For this reason, most residents do their shopping in Kenora, but some also choose to go to Dryden or Winnipeg.
The Community of Grassy Narrows is in the Boreal Forest and is home to a large number of North American Flora and Fauna.
There is great diversity in the different species of birds that you can witness, from the Black capped Chickadee, and Whiskey Jacks, up to the Loon, Trumpeter Swans, and Blue Heron.
There are also an abundance of Fox, Wolves, Black Bear and Beaver in the area. Sometimes, you can simply watch the wildlife from your own kitchen window. We would like to note that one should always use caution when interacting with any wildlife in the area, as wild animals can be unpredictable.
The community is very active and extremely welcoming to those that come to live or visit the community.
There are a number of other programs running in the community year round. The community hosts a Cultural week in October, a Winter Games competition in February, and many other activities. These include, First aid training, trapper courses, and fire arms safety courses.
Furthermore, the community hosts a wide variety of Community activities, from Fishing Derbies, to Pow wows throughout the year. We hold our a number of events either at the Community Complex, Trapping Center, School Gym or the Arena. In addition, they hold radio Bingos and many other community contests during the holidays. For instance, we have the Zombie Walk in October, and the Christmas Parade in December.
